PROVERBS 16:2
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
This is the case of a self-righteous man who is pure in his own eyes. So, he considers everything he does and every way he walks as pure, despite not being cleansed from his filthiness. He forgets that his best righteousness is as a filthy rag.
Proverbs chapter 16 verse 25 says –
“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Don't be right in your own eyes!
Yield yourself in obedience to the word of God!
Don't consider yourself as somebody who is pure in what you are doing.
It is only the word of God that can purify you. And as you are yielded to the word of God, the word of God teaches you the way to go to profit. It teaches you the way God has approved of you.
As the Scripture says in Proverbs 21 verse 2 –
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.”
It is the LORD that weighs the heart. He knows what is in your heart. And you know it, that the heart is deceitful, and desperately wicked: who can know it? But God knows it!
So, don't deceive yourself!
All your ways may look clean in your own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. The LORD knows the motives behind everything you are doing.
The Scripture says in Proverbs chapter 30 verse 12 –
“There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.”
It is only the word of God that can cleanse you from the filthiness of the flesh and the spirit. So, all your ways may look clean in your own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
To Saul, his ways were clean in his own eyes, but the evidence of his disobedience sounded loud.
In 1 Samuel chapter 15 from verse 13 –
“And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.”
Verse 14: “And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
To Saul, he took it that he has fulfilled what God has called him to do. But he did not keep to the commandment of the LORD.
To him, what he did was right. But God weigheth the spirit. God knows the motives of everything you are doing.
You can deceive people: but you cannot deceive God. Know it, that God weighs your spirit. He weighs what you are doing. Whatever you are doing is put in the balance of the word of God. If it fails in the balance, you have failed! So, don't mark yourself right when the word of God is condemning what you are doing!!
For “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
God spoke to Israel in Jeremiah chapter 2 from verse 21. He said –
“Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?”
God chose Israel and planted it as a right seed; a seed that many other nations shall come to lend from; a righteous seed.
But look at what God said in Jeremiah chapter 2 verse 22 –
“For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much sope, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.”
So, God was warning them, irrespective of their external appearance of righteousness. So, God was telling the people of Israel – even though you try to appear righteous, externally washing yourself with soap; yet thine iniquity is marked before me.
So, we can not externally pretend that we are righteous before the LORD.
The LORD weighs the spirit.
The LORD sees your heart.
He knows what is in your heart.
That is what He is telling the people of Israel here– “For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much sope, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.”
Verse 23: “How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;”
So, He told the people of Israel- you have strayed away from the truth.
If you stray away from the truth, you may pretend that you are walking in the truth: but God sees the motive; He sees your heart. He knows what you are doing.
I ENCOURAGE YOU:
Repent from your evil ways!
For “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
The LORD weighs your spirit. He knows what is in you, and what you are doing.
Luke Chapter 18 verse 9 says –
“And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:”
Verse 10: “Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.”
Verse 11: “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.”
Verse 12: “I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.”
Verse 13: “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”
Verse 14: “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
This publican did not operate in self-righteousness. The Pharisee operated in self-righteousness, speaking all that he does. But the publican in his humility, asked for God's mercy.
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
I ENCOURAGE YOU: …
Let not your ways be clean in your eyes!
Be always humble to ask for mercy in whatever you are doing, because God weighs the spirit.
God knows the motives of everything you are doing.
The motive behind it; He knows it!
For “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
‘If your eye is evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!’ [Ref: Matthew 6:23].
If your ways are clean in your own eyes– your eyes that are evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness.
And the Scripture says in Isaiah chapter 5 verse 20, it says–
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
Let not your ways be clean in your own eyes!
Let God judge your motives!
Allow God to judge your motives!!
Don’t deceive yourself!!
For “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
There is a spirit behind every action. And God tries the hearts: He sees, He knows and observes them. He knows the motives behind every action. He weighs all actions in the balance of His word.
Proverbs chapter 5 verse 21–
“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.”
So, know it, that …
God sees all your goings.
He knows all you are doing.
So, don't deceive yourself.
Let not your ways be clean in your own eyes.
Allow God to prove your ways.
In selecting a stable king for Israel, see what God told Samuel, in 1 Samuel chapter 16 from verse 6 –
“And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.”
Verse 7: “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
The LORD sees your heart.
He knows what you are thinking.
He knows the motives behind what you are doing;
He knows why you are doing what you are doing.
So, …
Don't deceive yourself!
Don't allow your heart to deceive you!!
For the Scripture says in Jeremiah chapter 17 from verse 9 –
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Verse 10: “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”
So, know it, that “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.”
The LORD will put everything you are doing in the balance of His word. And anyone that fails, will make you a failure. But when you remain yielded in obedience to the word of God and your motives are right, God will approve of your doings.
And this is my desire for you:
That your way should not be clean in your own eyes.
Let the LORD approve of what you are doing.
And if the LORD approves of what you are doing, you will remain blessed in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
