PROVERBS 15:12
“A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.”
A scorner is one that makes a jest of God and godliness. He abhors that which is good. He is defiant to the truth.
He treats the Gospel, the word of God, and the ministers of it with contempt.
He scuffs at religion and its ordinances.
He makes a mock of sin and the judgments that follow it.
Such a person does not love the person that reproves him; and he also hates such a one that teaches him, and corrects him, and tells him the truth.
A scorner despises preachers of truth.
Amos chapter 5 verse 10, it says–
“They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.”
So: ...
A scorner does not like people who speak uprightly.
Those who speak the truth, a scorner abhors. So, a scorner thinks ill of him that speaketh the truth. He bears him a grudge and abhors him.
See what Ahab said concerning Micaiah in 1 Kings chapter 22 verse 8 –
“And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.”
So, the king of Israel, Ahab, is a scorner. He doesn’t like he who tells him the truth. Micaiah the prophet tells him the truth. He takes it that ‘Micaiah the prophet’ is prophesying evil against him. Because he himself is evil, that is why he thinks that Micaiah prophesies evil against him.
Instead of him taking the rebuke, taking the correction, and purposing to walk in the way of the LORD, … he looked at it from a different angle.
So, “A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.”
He will always find a way to speak evil of him that reproves him.
He does all he can to cause harm to the person and his name.
Isaiah 29, I will start from verse 19. It says –
“The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.”
Verse 20: “For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:”
Verse 21: “That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.”
So, the scorner takes offence against him that reproves him, and causes offence for such a one.
He will lay a snare for him;
He will do everything to sabotage him in whatever he is doing.
He will always find a way to speak evil of him that reproves him.
If possible, he will cause harm to the person that is telling him the truth.
That’s why the Scripture encourages us in Proverbs chapter 9 from verse 7, it says –
“He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.”
Verse 8: “Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.”
So, …
Scorners hate those who correct them.
Scorners hate those who show them the truth.
Scorners will do anything to harm him that tells them the truth.
For “A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.”
So, reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee!
If you rebuke a wise man, he will increase in wisdom; and He will love you for correcting him, for bringing him to the place of righteousness.
That’s why the Scripture says – “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.” [Ref: Proverbs 9:9].
But, a scorner will hate you if you reprove him, because :
He is not ready to go unto the wise.
He is not ready to receive the wisdom of God, because he lacks the fear of God.
A scorner loves darkness rather than light, because his deeds are evil.
So, he doesn’t like to be told the truth, … as the Scripture says in Gospel of John chapter 3 from verse 20.
It says –
“For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”
So:
A scorner likes to hide in darkness.
He doesn’t like light.
He is not open to receive the Glorious Light of the Gospel.
So, when the Gospel comes as reproof, as correction, he will hate such a one who is telling him the truth. “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”
John chapter 3 verse 21 continues, it says –
“But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
So, a scorner does not like anybody that will tell him the truth. But even if he does not like to hear the truth, we should not be discouraged from preaching the truth as the Scripture advises us. We should be instant to preach the truth.
As the Scripture advises us in 2 Timothy chapter 4 from verse 2, it says–
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
Verse 3: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;”
Verse 4: “And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
So, a scorner is one who has turned his ears away from the truth.
He likes fables.
He does not endure sound doctrine.
He is not teachable.
He is not open to be corrected.
So, “A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.”
He does not desire the company of the wise; for he that walks with the wise will become wise.
He likes the company of fools.
He avoids the company of those that have the fear of God, lest he is convicted by the truth that is made manifest through such association.
Neither does he go to a place that the truth is taught.
He will not go unto the wise, lest they give him wise counsel based on the word of God.
The Scorner will avoid a genuine child of God, because of the fear of being told his faults and the good reasons for him to repent.
So, a scorner prefers to remain in his foolishness and to continue in his foolishness.
He is not ready to change; and he is not ready to accept correction. That’s why he hates him that teacheth him the truth.
He hates him that reproveth him.
He will not go unto the wise.
He will remain in the company of fools; And he will be destroyed!
I encourage you: …
Don’t scuff at the truth.
Don’t despise those who are telling you the truth
Make it a point that you will hear the truth. And
Open yourself for conviction.
And purpose to return and remain in the truth and walk in the truth, because it is only the truth that will set you free; ... The truth you know and the truth you are doing!
So:
Do not be a scorner that loveth not one that reproveth him. But rather, be somebody who will desire to be in the company of the wise.
For: ...
When you walk with the wise, you will become wiser.
When you keep company of the righteous and purpose to walk in their own ways, - the way of the LORD, the truth and the life that is in Christ Jesus, … you will become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; because you have accepted what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross of Calvary.
And because you have accepted what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross of Calvary,
you will purpose to abide in the word;
you will abide in the truth;
and you will be a doer of the word, and not just a hearer deceiving yourself.
So, I desire you: ...
Be a wise man!
Receive the wisdom of God who is Christ : the Power of God, and the Wisdom of God.
And as you do this, remain blessed in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
